A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that protects and strengthens a natural tooth. Teeth can sometimes become weak, brittle, damaged or decayed and require extra support from a restoration.

Crowns Are Versatile Restorations

Many patients may benefit from a custom-made dental crown in Ballina because they can:

  • Protect a weak or brittle tooth from further decay or damage
  • Shield and restore a severely worn-down tooth
  • Cover a cracked, chipped or fractured tooth
  • Conceal a discoloured or stained tooth
  • Stabilise an imbalanced bite
  • Cap and support a tooth with a large filling
  • Enclose a misshapen tooth
  • Shield a tooth weakened by a root canal
  • Top a dental implant
  • Secure a dental bridge

At Ballina Coast Dental, we offer various custom-made dental crowns made from zirconia, lithium disilicate (EMAX), porcelain (ceramic) and gold.

Our restorative dentists also are pleased to offer same-day CEREC dental crowns in Ballina. Using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), we can design and fabricate your custom dental crown on-site at our Ballina dental clinic. And the best part? Your dentist can complete your dental crown in a single dental appointment!

Dental Crowns in Ballina, NSW

If you have a vulnerable or damaged tooth that needs extra protection, we invite you to arrange a dental crown consultation at Ballina Coast Dental. A dental crown can restore your tooth's function, structural integrity and appearance.

Dental fillings can effectively repair a small area of tooth decay using tooth-coloured composite resin. A dental crown can restore and protect a vulnerable or damaged natural tooth. At Ballina Coast Dental, we may recommend a dental crown to repair and restore a tooth that is severely decayed, broken or damaged.

Crowns can strengthen teeth and reinforce the tooth's structure while also protecting the underlying natural tooth. Whether you need a dental filling or crown depends on several factors. Ultimately, the only way to determine which treatment you will need is to see your dentist for a thorough oral health evaluation.

However, here are some common reasons for needing a crown rather than a filling:

  • If a tooth is severely cracked or the decay is too significant for a filling, your dentist may recommend a crown.
  • Teeth that have received root canal therapy may require a crown to completely restore the tooth's function and appearance.
  • Patients who grind and clench their teeth at night may need a crown to protect against dental wear and damage.
  • Teeth with large or years-old fillings may benefit from a crown that provides more coverage and stability.

Dental implant placement involves replacing a tooth root with a biocompatible screwlike post. A dental implant can replace damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that function and look just like natural ones. Many patients and dentists prefer dental implants because they are a permanent and welcome alternative to dentures or bridgework.

The Dental Implant Process

Dental implant placement involves two main steps.

Step 1: The first step is placing the dental implant post in the jawbone. Your dentist surgically places the implant in the jawbone, and over time, the jawbone grows around the implant through a process called osseointegration. When the bone and gums heal, the implant is ready to accept the abutment (connector) piece and the artificial tooth.

Step 2: The second step involves taking digital impressions of the patient’s mouth and remaining teeth to create a realistic, artificial tooth or set of teeth. When the final restoration is ready, we place it on top of the abutment piece and implant post. The dentist will make any adjustments at this time to ensure your newly restored smile is to your satisfaction.

Because the jaw needs to heal and grow around the implant, the dental implant process can take months from start to finish. As with any treatment, the specific procedure, timeline and recovery depend on the patient’s unique case.

Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Most patients adjust to wearing a MAS within a few nights. Since it’s custom-fitted, it’s designed for comfort and ease of use. The splint is easy to clean with a toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleaning tablets, and we’ll provide instructions to help you care for it properly.

A Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) is a custom-made oral device used to treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It works by gently positioning the lower jaw (mandible) slightly forward during sleep, which helps to keep the airway open and reduce airway obstruction.

MAS is suitable for patients with snoring or mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, especially those who are unable to tolerate CPAP therapy. It’s also a great option for people who travel frequently or prefer a less intrusive solution. A sleep study and a consultation are required to determine suitability.
